Kerabu Pucuk Paku dengan Kerang

One of Prophet Muhammad's eating habits include not to mix food that comes from the land and sea together, for example he advised us not to eat food from land animals like beef from cattle with sea animals, like mackerels.  It has been scientifically proven that these foods take different lengths of time to digest where fish takes a shorter time while beef takes longer.  The difference in time that it takes for these foods to digest can cause stomach upset and if an individual persists on this type of diet, things can get more serious!

And so, when my children requested Beef Rib Soup for lunch today, I knew I had to add another dish to today's menu.  I mean, I don't really like to eat beef (or any other red meat for that matter) and I already have fried fish on the list, so Fern Shoots Kerabu seems the appropriate accompaniment.  Now, I can keep to eating food from the same category, that is seafood; fried mackerel and cockles in the 'kerabu'.
  • 500g fern shoots, blanched
  • 250g cockles, boiled and shucked
  • 8 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1 red chili, pounded
  • 5 birds eye chili, pounded
  • 1 cup shredded coconut, lightly toasted
  • 1 thumb size shrimp paste
  • Juice from 2 limes
  • Salt to taste

Mix well the shallots, red chili, birds eye chili, shrimp paste, cockles, lime juice and salt.  Then mix in the toasted shredded coconut.  Finally mix this with the blanched fern shoots thoroughly.  Serve immediately.
