Semur Ikan Pedas

Star Q

It's been more than a week into the Eid celebrations and I personally, have had enough of the constant menus containing meats and chicken.  Thank God, my gout has not been acting up (knock on wood, fingers crossed and all that!)  Being someone who prefers fish to meat, the past week without any kind of fish dish has got me wanting for some.

Lemon Squares

Star Q

This is something that I made earlier but didn't have the time to post (as with a few other recipes coming your way in the next few days! Haha!)  But, whatever it is, this dessert is definitely suitable for an open house.  Of course it is sweet, but it also has that lemony tang that can cut through all the savory treats you've been during all those many open houses!

Chicken Curry Pilaf

Star Q

It's the first day back from 'balik kampung' after Eid Mubarak and the missus had tons of things to do; from cleaning the house to washing loads of dirty clothes, to taking out the good china to preparing the cookies.  However preparing lunch was not one of them, and so, I was left to my own resources to prepare lunch.  This I know because she was quiet direct in telling that she won't be preparing lunch!

Beef Stew

Star Q

Stews have been a long-time favorite of mine ever since I can remember.  It certainly beats the ordinary soup that we Malays are so often used to; the ones with the cumin, coriander, cinnamon and other spice mix.  We are so used to the type of soup where we dunk the beef into, either cold stock or one where the aromatics have been sauteed.

Tomato Provencal & Aglio Olio

Star Q

Who would ever think of having Spaghetti Aglio Olio and Tomato Provencal for Iftaar!  Especially when think an omnivore like me going vegetarian all the way.  One would think that this menu would be very bland (it is!) but when you take time to savor the dish, you will get to taste all the intricate ingredients (excuses of a tomato fanatic!)

Mee Suah Soup

Star Q

As you can very well see by now, my family and I don't live on rice alone.  In fact, we also enjoy other types of carbs other than rice.  And my kids don't complain either.  Of course, it is typical for most Malays to have rice every day (and some with Masak Lemak Cili Api every day, too!)

Lemon Curd Tarts

Star Q

It another dessert.  It looks like I've been making more desserts this week than anything else.  But as you may know by now, all my desserts for Iftaar are easy and breezy.  Like everyone else, I like to spend time in the kitchen, but I don't want to live in it!

Vicky's Sponge

Star Q

Last Sunday, the missus and I decided to visit a friend whose father is suffering from ailments related to the liver.  This particular ailment reduced his mobility to a mere minimum and my friend (a lady teacher) has to help him as he potters about in the house!  And as it is customary (for me at least) to bring something for the host whom I am visiting, I decided to make a simple cake.

Simple Lychee Pudding

Star Q

It's the weekend once again; a long awaited one no less.  I've (and most of my colleagues!) had to go through three meetings this week and the long hours really got on my nerves.  I used to remember, during fasting month, the school never conducted any meetings, plus the school hours were much shorter.  Those were the days!

Patin Masak Kuah Lada Dengan Kerisek

Star Q

Another day of tasteless taste buds wanting something sharp to whet the appetite!  Sigh!  The craving for a sour, sharp and spicy recipe lead me to this dish!  This plus the addition of the fragrant ginger torch bud, made my dry taste buds wake up!  During breaking of fast, I actually finished one bowl of this Asam dish alone, slurping the gravy with gusto!

Sizzling Mee Suah

Star Q

Fasting month does not only affect my appetite during the breaking of fast, it also affects my appetite during Sahur.  It is especially during this time, around 5.00 o'clock in the morning, when you don't really feel like eating (more so because of sleepiness!) and every thing that goes into the mouth taste so peculiar! (eewww!)
